We are in them. The dog days of summer. It’s hot and humid and we just want to stay cool and dry. Growing up, we did not have central air conditioning in our home until maybe I was in junior high school. We had a wall A/C unit in the living room and my sisters,…

Kiss Me, I’m American

Posted on July 4, 2017April 22, 2019 by Indrani

When I  was in high school, I made a button to wear that said, “Kiss Me, I’m American.”  It was around the 4th of July and I thought it was pretty clever.  A fellow Indian teenager asked why I was wearing it because I was so clearly Indian.  But, what does “American” mean and why…

Food Philosophy

Posted on May 5, 2017April 22, 2019 by Indrani

A philosophy of food. Every chef and foodie will have one. Food to me is one of the most intimate experiences you can have. From selecting ingredients for dishes, growing your own produce and herbs, to cooking, to eating, you will be using all five of your senses; you touch it, hear it, see it,…

Before getting to the recipe today, let us first talk about what curry is.  In Indian cuisine, curry is the broth, sauce, or gravy.  Curries can have meat in them, vegetables, or even both.  They also come in many variations with many different blends of spices depending on the dish. There are some Indian spices that many have heard of such as cumin, turmeric, garam masala.  And then there are some Indian spices that have a mysteriousness around them.  One such ingredient is amchur powder or mango powder.  Amchur powder is made from unripe green mangoes and has a citrus flavor to it.  Some people…

In just a few short months, my husband and I will be celebrating our 10-year wedding anniversary.  The time has been both long and short.  I think about our wedding a lot.  It was one of the funnest experiences I have ever had.  We had the opportunity to do both an Indian and American ceremonies. …

Food is Love

Posted on April 6, 2016April 22, 2019 by Indrani

I love to cook. And I love to eat. But I think more than that, I love to cook for and eat with my family. There is something strangely intimate about sharing a meal. We go out on first date dinners, anniversary dinners, shower lunches, family reunion picnics, girls’ night out dinner and drinks, business…

Family Roots from One Seedling

Posted on February 24, 2016April 22, 2019 by Indrani

When I first saw this picture, my initial thought was, “Wow.  It looks just like Rishi.”  Rishi is my baby brother.  Well, not so much a baby anymore but that is a story for another time.  The next thought in my mind was not just one thought but a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions.  The…

Cilantro. Parsley. What’s the difference?

Posted on February 8, 2016April 22, 2019 by Indrani

One day when I was in high school, I was sent to the grocery store to get dhono patha. When I came home with parsley, I was informed by my father that I bought the wrong ingredient.  Before that day, I did not know the word cilantro.  I had heard of parsley, but only as…

monbool

Finding my way through the love of art, food, family, and friends.

What does monbool mean?  monbool is a word I made up.  Mon (pronounced mōn) was my mother’s childhood nickname and Bool was my father’s childhood nickname.  The passion I have for what I am doing came from them, so I have named this journey in their honor.

I am Indrani, a first generation Indian-American whose parents originally migrated from Kolkata, India.  My passion and inspiration for cooking developed from spending time in the kitchen and learning from my father who would cater for large gatherings.  My mother encouraged all forms of art, including drawing, dance and music.  Growing up with a strong, traditional Indian upbringing, my parents also encouraged participation in the American culture.  And now in my own mixed culture family, the fusion of Indian and American traditions is embraced by my husband and children.
