Taco Seasoning Recipe

Posted on June 4, 2019June 4, 2019 by Indrani

Taco Tuesday seems like it has taken over everyone’s house, including ours!  Every week I ask my family for dinner ideas because coming up with a creative, rotating menu by myself can be exhausting.  But what do you know?  My kids don’t care as much about variety as I do and every week, they want…

Party Appetizer – Tuna Chop

Posted on December 6, 2018April 16, 2019 by Indrani

It has started.  Everyone has gotten busy with holiday decorating, shopping, baking, and get togethers.  Are you hosting?  Will you be a guest?  Will the parties be a formal dinner or more of a dessert and appetizer kind of thing? Growing up Hindu, we did not celebrate Christmas.  But we did celebrate the warm, generous…

A Recipe for “Bread Stuff” – Indian Stuffing

Posted on November 6, 2018April 22, 2019 by Indrani

Now that Halloween has passed, I am looking forward to my favorite American holiday, Thanksgiving. Aside from the centerpiece meal that this holiday tends to focus around (or sides like stuffing), I love Thanksgiving because it does not revolve around material things. We really have a chance to get into the spirit of gratitude and…

Payesh – Indian Rice Pudding

Posted on October 5, 2018April 22, 2019 by Indrani

Puja season is around the corner and I can already feel the excitement in the air.  I feel it when I go out in the mornings and the air is crisp. I can smell the dew on the grass and see the leaves changing color.  Obviously these sensory cues would be different if I had…

Rooti, like rice, is a staple in Indian homes.  You may just see it at every meal.  It is a very simple preparation of a flat bread that does not take a lot of time or ingredients.  Rooti is the Bengali word for this food item.  If you hear anyone say roti, rotli, or chapati,…

Posted on June 25, 2018April 22, 2019 by Indrani

Shooji (sooji), can go by a few different names.  Haloowa (halwa) and Shira are a couple of others. What it is, essentially, is the Indian equivalent of Cream of Wheat.  In Indian culture, this is a dessert and is often times seen made for pujas (religious ceremonies).  We eat it a lot for breakfast. It…

Tandoori Spice Inspired Turkey Burgers

Posted on June 5, 2018April 22, 2019 by Indrani

What’s more American than a burger hot off the grill on a summer day?  Not much.  If not a burger, maybe a hot dog.  We enjoy tandoori chicken on the grill often over the summer months, but you know what?  We like burgers off the grill, too.  We have seen so many ways to build…

Vadai – India’s Version of the Beloved Falafel

Posted on May 4, 2018April 22, 2019 by Indrani

The weather is getting nicer and we are spending so much time outside.  And when out and about, who doesn’t love to visit a food truck for some great street food?  A little walk and talk around the city with something deep fried to snack on sounds like a very enjoyable afternoon to me!  India’s…

Ghee – Indian Clarified Butter

Posted on April 4, 2018April 22, 2019 by Indrani

Growing up, rice with butter and salt was a staple in my diet and it is also eaten quite often by my own children.  But when we got to have ghee with our rice, that was something special.  It reminds me of my grandmother.  After she mixed the rice up with the ghee and salt,…

Have you ever heard or or tried Jackfruit?  Jackfruit is a tree that is native to India and is related to the fig tree.  The flesh of the fruit that comes from this tree resembles cooked, pulled meat when it is prepared.  In Bengali, we call this Gaatch Pata which literally translates into Tree [Goat]…

monbool

Finding my way through the love of art, food, family, and friends.

What does monbool mean?  monbool is a word I made up.  Mon (pronounced mōn) was my mother’s childhood nickname and Bool was my father’s childhood nickname.  The passion I have for what I am doing came from them, so I have named this journey in their honor.

I am Indrani, a first generation Indian-American whose parents originally migrated from Kolkata, India.  My passion and inspiration for cooking developed from spending time in the kitchen and learning from my father who would cater for large gatherings.  My mother encouraged all forms of art, including drawing, dance and music.  Growing up with a strong, traditional Indian upbringing, my parents also encouraged participation in the American culture.  And now in my own mixed culture family, the fusion of Indian and American traditions is embraced by my husband and children.
