Taco Tuesday seems like it has taken over everyone’s house, including ours! Every week I ask my family for dinner ideas because coming up with a creative, rotating menu by myself can be exhausting. But what do you know? My kids don’t care as much about variety as I do and every week, they want tacos. So being me, I try to make different types of tacos, ground turkey, chicken, steak, shrimp, event veggie. But, I am met with resistance when I make anything but the ground turkey filling.
Would you like to try making our home’s taco filling? Here is the recipe for the seasoning I make. I mix it in with one pound of cooked and drained ground turkey (93% lean), 1 tablespoon of tomato paste, and one cup of water. It is smoky and is a little spicy. You can adjust the spicy level by either increasing or decreasing the amount of chipotle powder or adding more or less of the other spice powders. Feel free to adjust the flavors to your taste. You can also use this seasoning as part of a marinade or rub.
Indrani’s Smoky Taco Seasoning
Mix the following spice powders:
- 1.5 tsp. Cumin Powder
- 1.5 tsp. Chipotle Powder
- 1 tsp. Smoked Paprika
- 1 tsp. Onion Powder
- 1.5 tsp. Garlic Powder
- 1 tsp. Ground Fennel Seeds
- 1 tsp. Dried Oregano
- 1 tsp. Salt
What do you put on your tacos?
We do not use a lot of sour cream at home. It seems like whenever I buy it, it goes bad before we can finish it. So as an alternative in our tacos, we use plain greek yogurt. It gives the dish a similar creamy and tangy factor and I feel better knowing I won’t have to waste a container of sour cream.
Do you have a taco topping that we don’t usually see but you think we should try? Please let us know how you Taco Tuesday in the comments. Even though my kids are happy eating the same things over and over again, I like to try new things!
