Food Philosophy

Posted on May 5, 2017April 22, 2019 by Indrani

A philosophy of food. Every chef and foodie will have one.

Food to me is one of the most intimate experiences you can have. From selecting ingredients for dishes, growing your own produce and herbs, to cooking, to eating, you will be using all five of your senses; you touch it, hear it, see it, smell it, and taste it. Oh my goodness. Really, to me food is a whole mind and body experience. You also get to experience and learn about history and other parts of the world. Some of our favorite home comfort foods come from a certain time period. Learn about what they are. International cuisine teaches us about geography, climate, and culture through the types of spices and ingredients used and through the preparation techniques.   There’s a reason why food from around the world looks and tastes different than where you are from.

So go and try EVERYTHING! (Unless of course you have an allergy or food intolerance of some kind. Stay away from those foods because it kind of ruins the food experience if you get sick.)   Enjoy the adventure in trying different types of cuisines. Try new foods. Be brave and eat things that look scary. Don’t be shy to really get into and relish what you are eating. There will be things you try and don’t like. And that’s ok. But more than finding things you don’t like, you will be amazed at what you will discover as new favorites.

Recently, my sister nominated me as a “Foodie Mom” for a local magazine feature.

In the interview, I was asked what I hope to accomplish for the future as a “foodie mom.” The “foodie” population in American culture is growing and I love that! With more and more people eating international cuisine and creating fusions of different ethnic cuisines, I hope to contribute to more people trying, understanding, and incorporating Indian cuisine into their lifestyle. You can see the full article with all of the foodie moms here.

Happy eating, Everyone!

monbool

Finding my way through the love of art, food, family, and friends.

What does monbool mean?  monbool is a word I made up.  Mon (pronounced mōn) was my mother’s childhood nickname and Bool was my father’s childhood nickname.  The passion I have for what I am doing came from them, so I have named this journey in their honor.

I am Indrani, a first generation Indian-American whose parents originally migrated from Kolkata, India.  My passion and inspiration for cooking developed from spending time in the kitchen and learning from my father who would cater for large gatherings.  My mother encouraged all forms of art, including drawing, dance and music.  Growing up with a strong, traditional Indian upbringing, my parents also encouraged participation in the American culture.  And now in my own mixed culture family, the fusion of Indian and American traditions is embraced by my husband and children.
