A Recipe for Homemade Naan

Posted on September 6, 2017April 22, 2019 by Indrani

There is a little guilty pleasure that comes from eating a piece of warm, soft, and chewy naan.  It goes with everything.  Making naan is something that has been pretty intimidating to me.  It seemed like it was something that would take a long time and even with the time, did I have the right equipment to do it?  Well, I finally bit the bullet and decided to try it.  It turns out, you don’t need a tandoor to make amazingly soft, fluffy naan.  I would recommend using a cast iron skillet though.

My family loved this naan.  I laughed a little when my son said, “It tastes like real naan.”  So, if I can do it, you can do it.  You may even already have all the ingredients at home.  I hope you will try this recipe and let me know how it works for you!  Yum.  Fresh naan may become a regular thing in my home now.  And maybe the next time I feel like being brave, perhaps I’ll try making a stuffed naan.  Do you have any votes for what that stuffing should be?

Ingredients:

2- ¼ cups all purpose flour

1 tsp. salt

¼ oz. active dry yeast

½ cup warm water

1 tsp. sugar

½ cup plain yogurt

1 tbsp. vegetable oil

Extra oil for greasing skillet

Essential equipment:

Cast Iron Skillet

Directions:

1.Stir yeast, sugar, and warm water together in a small bowl. (It is important that the water is warm, not hot.   Water that is too hot can kill the yeast.)

2. Let the yeast activate. This will take about 10 minutes and the mixture will become foamy.

3. Mix flour and salt together in a large mixing bowl. Then make a well in the center.  Add the yeast mixture, yogurt, and oil to the flour.

4. Knead the dough until it has a smooth and shiny surface. This will take about 10 minutes. The consistency will be similar to play dough. If the dough is too sticky, add a little bit of flour at a time until the proper feel is reached.

5. Form the dough into a ball. Cover with a damp cloth and let it sit for about 1 hour in a warm place. The dough will rise and become about double in size.

6. Divide the dough into 12 parts. Roll each piece into a 4-in circle.

7. Heat cast iron skillet and lightly brush with oil.

8. Place one rolled dough onto the skillet for about 1 minute. The dough will start to bubble.

9. Brush the second side with oil and flip. Let the second side cook for one more minute and remove from heat.

10. Brush the naan with some melted butter, serve warm, and enjoy!

monbool

Finding my way through the love of art, food, family, and friends.

What does monbool mean?  monbool is a word I made up.  Mon (pronounced mōn) was my mother’s childhood nickname and Bool was my father’s childhood nickname.  The passion I have for what I am doing came from them, so I have named this journey in their honor.

I am Indrani, a first generation Indian-American whose parents originally migrated from Kolkata, India.  My passion and inspiration for cooking developed from spending time in the kitchen and learning from my father who would cater for large gatherings.  My mother encouraged all forms of art, including drawing, dance and music.  Growing up with a strong, traditional Indian upbringing, my parents also encouraged participation in the American culture.  And now in my own mixed culture family, the fusion of Indian and American traditions is embraced by my husband and children.
